The weekend starts here – gigs, films, festivals & more

Thursday

7pm-8.10pm: Death in Venice by the Croatian National Ballet at the Erkel Theatre

Choreographing the literary landmark by Thomas Mann to the film score used by Luchino Visconti – who had Dirk Bogarde gracefully bow beneath the bridges of Venice in time to Mahler’s Fifth – this one-part production by the Croatian National Ballet celebrates the 140th anniversary of its foundation. Japan’s Takuya Sumitomo plays the smitten Gustav von Aschenbach, Andrea Schifano the youthful object of his affections, Tadzio. Tickets here.

8pm-9.30pm: Dávid Lamm at Müpa

Acclaimed Hungarian jazzster Dávid Lamm plays a session of his own new tunes, accompanied by fellow guitarist Zsolt Bartha, pianist Balázs Neumann, three drummers, three violinists, three vocalists, a narrator and a rapper, no less.

8pm-11pm: Pablo Chandez + Ritual Glow & Zajnal at the Dürer Kert

Three acts share the bill at the Dürer Kert on Thursday night. The more industrial-tinged Pablo Chandez bring to the table something of the gloom of the Csepel factory complex. Art-rockers Ritual Glow combine psychedelia with indie thanks to guitar effects and the sounds of the synthesiser, while Zajnal use folk instruments but not for a concert of folk music per se. The whole evening carries an admission charge of 1,000 forints.

Friday

10am-4pm: Doughnut & Kocsonya Weekend at Babka Budapest

Kocsonya is a traditional Hungarian cold salty jelly, similar to aspic, made mostly from pork, served with hearty bread, lemon juice or vinegar to sprinkle. Over the three days of this weekend, starting on Friday, anyone is welcome to taste or takeaway this winter classic. Doughnuts provided by Bomboloni also feature. Venue is the convivial Babka café/bakery, definitive haunt of the urban hipsters and young mums of Újlipótváros. Register with reservation@babkabudapest.hu.

Noon-10pm: Mulled Wine Festival at Fröccsterasz

Where better to stage Budapest’s first festival of mulled wine than Fröccsterasz? Occupying the city’s former main bus station in the heart of town, ‘Spritzer Terrace’ comes into its own in summer, when its outside tables lend themselves to convivial sipping overlooking a pretty water feature on a bustling open square. Otherwise quiet in winter, the Fröccsterasz is hoping to drum up activity in the depths of January with this three-day extravaganza, running from noon to 10pm all weekend, presenting 30 types of wine specialities, seasonal delicacies and other hot drinks.

11pm-4.30am: NeoBudapest pres Envo – Dreams Live at Dürer Kert

The inaugural event by a new party crew in town, NeoBudapest, showcases local exponents of synthwave. On the scene for some time, headliner DJ Envo is now ready to release his first album. Four other acts provide support, opening with dystopia-inspired Megahit.

Saturday

10am-2pm: Wardrobe Fair at Dürer Kert

A simple, fun and communal way to refresh your wardrobe – bowl up to Budapest’s leading punk and metal venue of a Saturday morning, and browse the stalls of unwanted clothes. You can also bring your own, washed and ironed, of course, but you’ll have to provide your own price tags, hangars, racks and baskets. Free to enter for shoppers, tables 5,000-8,000 forints for vendors.

10am-3pm: 100 Sparks at Budapest Bägel Buda

A lovely, imaginative project, 100 Sparks is an art initiative focusing on a small village in Nógrád county, about the way of life in this Palóc region and its vintage motorbike culture. Palóc is a community of disappearing villages, dirt roads, hills, meadows, forests and long-forgotten stories. On Saturday at the Buda outlet of Budapest Bägel, visitors can taste special palóc bagels, learn more about 100 Sparks and the Be a Spark art week.

8pm-11pm: Napfonat, Meszecsinka at Fonó

There’s a great night of multi-national folk music lined up at world-music hub Fonó deep in south Buda. The evening kicks off with Napfonat, a female vocal five-piece with roots in Hungary, Russia and the region, performing songs of traditional Hungarian, Slovak, Spanish, Polish, Russian and Gypsy origin. They will be followed by Meszecsinka, a lively, well-travelled duo who combine Hungarian and Bulgarian folklore with a little rock, flamenco and psychedelia.

11.30pm-6am: Bladerunnaz pres It’s a Gee Thing! at the Akvárium Klub

Headlined by Kent’s drum & bass master Macky Gee, a night of mainly British DJing has been put together by Budapest party experts Bladerunnaz. Much-travelled d&b duo Annix provide able support, along with Original Sin and Cornwall’s own Jack the Ripper UK. Tickets start at 4,990 forints, or 9,490 forints if combined with a live show earlier this evening of Leeds’ Fox Stevenson presenting new album Killjoy.

Sunday

10.03am-4.15pm: Open Day on the Children’s Railway

Starting out at 10.03 on the dot from its Széchenyi-hegy terminus, the revered Children’s Railway will be chugging off for its Open Day on rails, with tours of its inner workings, films, demonstrations and uniform presentations. Although much will be in Hungarian, the magic of a rarely seen, diminutive C50 locomotive ploughing through the winter landscape of hilly Buda, bare trees offering panoramic views, cannot be gainsaid. Trains set off for Hűvösvölgy station at three minutes past each hour, a journey of around 40 minutes.

10am-4pm: Kiskertpiac at Anker’t

Being staged at the Anker’t ruin bar for the last time before it closes, Kiskertpiac attracts gardeners and gastro fans. This fair showcases plants, culinary and design products for a sustainable urban lifestyle. This time, organisers are aiming to provide inspiration for couples planning their wedding, by offering natural, flowery decorations and unique thank you gift ideas.

5.30pm-7.15pm: 12 Angry Men at the Bem cinema

Let’s face it, no-one can snarl like Lee J. Cobb, in memorable form as he faces a conciliatory Henry Fonda in this classic courtroom drama made in 1957. Remarkably, this was Sidney Lumet’s directorial debut before he went on to make a string of acclaimed movies over the following 50 years. Intense and absorbing, 12 Angry Men is considered a masterpiece. Screened here in original English with Hungarian subtitles.
