Thursday
6.30pm-8.30pm: Eszkimó asszony fázik at the Bem cinema
A rare screening with English subtitles of this Hungarian cult classic, essential viewing for anyone interested in Budapest’s underground music scene of the 1980s. The story of a ménage à trois between a star classical pianist, a deaf-mute zookeeper and a femme fatale (only in Hungary, folks!), this revered film made a star out of singer/actress Marietta Méhes and its soundtrack brought the alternative music of the wondrous Trabant to a wider audience. Unmissable.
8pm – : chuffDRONE at the Opus Jazz Club
This week, this young Viennese five-piece launched a new CD at the renowned Porgy & Bess venue in the Austrian capital, and are now presenting it around Central Europe, the first stop abroad being the Opus Jazz Club in Budapest. Their second album, actio / re:actio channels intuitive jazz with Isaac Newton. Refreshingly, three of the five are women, on soprano sax, double bass and drums.
9pm-11pm: Hendrix Underground Experience at Lámpás
A trio set up as the original groundbreaking Hendrix combo of guitar/singer, bassist and drummer rework the music of the revered late rock star with jazz and blues elements liberally scattered hither and thither. The setting is perfect: a bohemian cellar in the party zone. Admission is free.
Friday
5.30pm-8pm: Tea tasting at the Flying Bird Tea House
China and Japan’s most renowned green teas will be presented and sampled at this tasting session. While explanations concerning cultivation, processing and the differences between the two cultures will be in Hungarian, sipping finely selected brews is universal.
8pm-11pm: Dance House in memory of Csaba Ökrös at the Fonó club
Musicians from ten bands perform to celebrate the life of lead fiddler Csaba Ökrös, a key figure in the traditional folk scene of Kalotaszeg and a teacher at the prestigious Franz Liszt Music Academy. Doubling up as the annual Folk Musicians’ Ball, this mini-festival is followed by a communal dance house led by the Dűvő band and should provide the perfect introduction for anyone interested in this revived traditional genre.
11pm-5am: In Memory of KK – Stabil at Ambient
Spinning in memory of Krisztián Kiss, aka respected Szolnok DJ Khristian K who passed away last November, Viktor Udvari, David Mole, Raqpar and Nu_Clear fill music basement Ambient with winning beats near Kálvin tér.
11.30pm-5am: Tesco Disco at the A38 Ship
Dance your way back to the ’80s thanks to party experts Tesco Disco, whose 2020 opener should also involve the rowdy sounds of the Klaxons, the Libertines and the Foals. Admission 1,000 forints.
Saturday
9.45am-1.45pm: Breakfast with the Gallerists at Brody House
Gallerists Bea Puskás and Tomas Opitz, initiators of the TOBE art project, will be holding an informal chat in English about their activities over a relaxed breakfast at the convivial Brody House, before a visit to the TOBE Gallery a short walk along Bródy Sándor utca. Participation is €10, apply to info@tobegallery.hu by Thursday, 16 January. Breakfast will be served from 10am, the gallery visit is at noon.
2pm-midnight: Skating Night at various venues
For the fourth time of asking, the Hungarian Ice Hockey Association is organising an annual Skating Night at a number of participating rinks. This year, however, ice hockey is also being played, but the main attraction is after-hours skating, and plenty of warming drinks to go with it. Altogether, more than 20 rinks are taking part across the country, including six in Budapest, most notably the large one in the City Park. For more on skating, see here.

5pm-6pm, 6.30pm-7.15pm & 7.30pm-10pm: A Celebration of Folk Music at Müpa
Starting with a free show for children in the Atrium at 5pm, the annual celebration of folk music at the Müpa Palace of Arts involves three performances altogether, culminating in the gala showcase at 7.30pm. The theme this year is polbeat, the dance music created with political overtones more than 40 years ago. Key performers include legendary singer Márta Sebestyén, the Cimbalom Brothers and, to play things out, Aurevoir.
5pm-10pm: Quality Vinyl Projects at the Budapest Jazz Club
Three bands – Android, Djabe and Solati – present their new albums on Quality Vinyl Projects (QVP), itself only recently launched in September 2019. These kinds of high-definition digital masters were first issued by Djabe, known for their work with Steve Hackett of Genesis fame, but the facility has become available to other groups as well. The evening starts with a presentation by QVP’s Attila Égerházi, who will describe his time working at Abbey Road and outline contemporary vinyl cutting and manufacturing techniques.
11.30pm-5am: Lost Frequencies at the Akvárium Klub
Belgian DJ Felix De Laet, aka Lost Frequencies, has just released his acclaimed second album, Alive and Feeling Fine, five years after his rework of Are You with Me took the world by storm. Brussels-born and –based, Lost Frequencies is a prominent artist on Armin van Buuren’s armada label.
Sunday
10am-6pm: Vegan Sunday market at Anker’t
For what will surely be the last time, given its imminent closure as recently reported, the classic ruin bar Anker’t will be hosting its regular Vegan Sunday market. Apart from a wide selection of handmade delicacies, the organisers lay on cooking workshops, round-table discussions and welcoming community spaces that go way beyond a basic Sunday browse.
10am-7pm: The Fans Strike Back at Bálna Budapest
Today is your last chance to see this exceptionally popular exhibition, its lifespan already extended an extra three weeks. Some 600 original items from the Star Wars franchise, the largest private collection in Europe, fill this large exhibition space. Marking the 40th anniversary of the Hungarian premiere of the first Star Wars movie, the show also includes a virtual reality feature and a Jedi training area.
7.45pm-10pm: Benjamin Beilman at Müpa
Equipped with his trusty Stradivarius dating back to 1709, young virtuoso violinist Benjamin Beilman has performed at some of the most prestigious concert halls in the world, including the Lincoln Center, the Concertgebouw, and now two nights at the Béla Bartók National Concert Hall at Müpa. On the agenda are Beethoven’s only violin concerto and the second symphony by Schumann, with backing from the Budapest Festival Orchestra. This is the first of Beilman’s two appearances.
8pm-11pm: Vinnie Moore at Dürer Kert
Guitarist with UFO and Alice Cooper, Delaware-born Vinnie Moore has recently released his Soul Shifter album on his own label, Mind’s Eye. This is he now taking on tour around Europe and the States, with Budapest an early stop, the punk and metal haven, Dürer Kert.
