Budapest Airport opens budget departure lounge – and assesses fast transit link

Back in September, we announced that a new waiting area would be built by the passenger gates for low-cost flights. Operational from today, Friday, 17 January, the lounge replaces the soulless container hut where travellers had to stand before.

The demolition of the old building will allow for further expansion of the new one to 11,500 square metres, with two additional passenger and six more bus gates being built beside the existing six. The total cost of the investment is HUF 8.3 billion (circa €25 million), financed exclusively by Budapest Airport.

Built in six months, the one-storey building, heated and air-conditioned, also features food and beverage outlets, three large toilet areas and a smoking terrace.

Balázs Fürjes, State Secretary for Budapest Development, announced at the unveiling that the airport operator had made a profit of HUF 35 billion (circa €105 billion) over the last two years and stated that if the new airport management were to be even more willing to co-operate with the government, both parties might agree upon the upgrading of existing buildings and future developments.

Fürjes also said that a study on the development of fast-track transit to the airport would be completed in January and presented to the Budapest Public Development Council. If the direction of development is agreed, then planning can begin. Concerning the high-speed rail, he said they had a valid building permit, but the project could only be implemented with EU funding, and there was still work to be done.
